Goose shooting in Scotland

Duck Shooting Holidays & Hunting Scotland, Duck Shooting Trips Scotland, Duck shooting Breaks Scotland.

Although ducks’ natural habit gets managed by natures tide, wind, weather and the moon, general ducks fly inland at dusk, to inlets and estuaries out on the mudflats, shallow ponds where freshly made flashings’ occurring after recent rains ducks feed on chaff and grass seeds and resting up for the night. There are ten species of duck shot legally in Scotland: The Mallard, Teal, Wigeon, Pintail, Shoveller, Gadwall, Tufted duck, Pochard, Goldeneye and Scaup are all legal quarries; coastal wildfowling and decoying cater for a high number of ducks shot in Scotland, although most water birds hunters shoot ducks and geese flighting into and out of inland ponds.

Duck and geese, majority of which are grass and seed eaters, naturally come inland at dusk to feed and roost for the night on flight ponds, flashings, returning to the mudflats or large lochs and shoreline at the breaking of dawn. Inland duck shooting takes place at first & last light in the morning & evenings when ducks, Teal and geese come into feed. These feeding locations are sometime mature crops or stubble fields, with ducks and geese feeding on barley or wheat left behind by the combine harvester, ponds are managed by keepers and hand fed with barley or other suitable feeds to attract the ducks.

There are a variety of duck and geese species available for hunters to shoot in Scotland. Where driven pheasant & partridge shoots release duck as an added species mallard would be the bird of choice.

Shooting Trip Highlights

Overview

An over & under twelve bores are a suitable all-round shotgun for duck shooting. If your field craft knowledge is of a reasonable standard, you can become remarkably successful with a standard 70mm (2 ¾”) chambered gun and cartridge. The preferred load of choice for the duck shooting enthusiast and wildfowlers has often preferred a 76mm (3”) chambered gun which provides the game bird shooter the option of heavier loads (providing a greater pattern density at distance).
Some duck hunters now choose to use 89mm (3 ½”) chambered shotgun, in either over & under or, semi-automatic models. This type of shotgun has been designed to deal large steel pellets in modern duck & wildfowling loads (must be steel shot proved).
Large-bore guns, in this case the 10, 8 and 4 bore shotguns, are also capable of handling large shot loads effectively, although for some many people they are cumbersome, and very heavy to carry on long walks on to a marsh.

You will find Orkney Islands just off the North-East point of the Scottish Mainland. The isles made up from seventy islands of which Orkney is by far the largest one, only twenty of those islands are occupy. Orkney consists of West Mainland and East Mainland with an area of 523 square miles.

The temperate climate and fertile lands make for the best farming country in Scotland, with large grass & barley fields. Creating the perfect habitat for grey-lag and pink-footed geese with a small feral communal residency of Canada geese.

In Orkney and Scotland, the duck & Goose population rises with the onset of autumn, waterfowl spend their winters living in Orkney

Ducks on their migration route stop off on Orkney every year in their tens of thousands. Indeed, the grey-lag resident population is currently holding at 23,000 with the overall population then increases to 80,000-90,000 recorded annually.

Shooting geese on early morning flights, usually method is by decoying geese on to their feeding fields with evening duck flights on ponds & splashes.
